“Gua” meaning scrape, “sha” meaning petechiae (redness that appears and encourages the skin to heal itself). The gua sha is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that dates back centuries. While the popular technique has taken over the skincare and wellness realms, it’s cultural significance in Eastern medicine goes back centuries. The gua sha was commonly used to alleviate muscle soreness, pain and illness by increasing the body’s blood flow with a scraping tool, stone or hands across areas of the body.
