The active ingredient: estriol (E3), the gentlest of the three

Your body makes three oestrogens: estradiol (E2), estrone (E1) and estriol (E3). Estradiol is the most potent and often found in products such as EstroGel and other forms of MHT/HRT.

Estriol is the weakest, with low binding strength at the oestrogen receptor and a short window of activity once absorbed.It works locally in the skin, binding to oestrogen receptors in the epidermis and dermis and stimulating the fibroblasts that produce collagen and elastin. This weaker form of oestrogen is also documented as giving women their “the pregnancy glow”.

Why current topical and vaginal oestrogen products should not go on your face

Most topical hormone products already on the market, whether body gels for menopause symptoms or vaginal creams and pessaries, are built around estradiol, the most potent of the three oestrogens.

MHT/HRT creams and gels are designed, dosed and safety tested for a specific site, either the vaginal mucosa or a small patch of body skin, not for daily application across the face, neck and decolletage. Facial skin is thin, highly permeable and richly supplied with blood vessels, and the surface area is large. A potent estradiol product spread across that area is a genuine route to systemic absorption, meaning it can raise the oestrogen level in your blood.

Vaginal creams are made for mucosal tissue and a specific pH. The base, the preservatives and the delivery system were never intended for the facial barrier. These products are not designed for the face and will generally be a thicker cream, causing breakouts, or a gel, which is incredibly drying for the thinner facial, neck and decolletage skin.

THE EVIDENCE THAT ESTROREPAIR STAYS LOCAL

In a six month study of 59 preclimacteric women, researchers applied our active concentration of estriol to the face and measured monthly hormone levels alongside the skin results.

Skin elasticity and firmness improved and wrinkle depth and pore size decreased by 61 to 100%, while no systemic hormonal side effects were observed and follicle stimulating hormone and estradiol (oestrogen) levels were unchanged

An earlier pilot in perimenopausal women using the same facial estriol approach reported the same pattern, visible skin improvement without systemic hormonal disruption (PMID 7877517).

In plain terms, women applied estriol to their faces every day for six months, and their blood hormone levels did not shift.

How it works

As oestrogen declines through perimenopause and menopause, the oestrogen receptors in your skin lose their signal. Collagen and elastin production slow, hyaluronic acid drops, oil production falls, cell turnover slows (from 28 days to approximately 45 days) and the barrier weakens.
